Crude oil is synonymous with wealth, profit and power. Nations fight over crude oil production levels, governments scheme to control oil prices, and launch wars to control fertile oil fields. To me oil is just another commodity not worth the clash of entire civilizations, even though the world is powered by oil and gas and ruled by the petroleum industry.
In American Suicide I attempt to work through my feelings about our dependence on crude from the Middle East. America is portrayed as a young women hanging herself from a gasoline hose. For years we’ve been hearing about alternative fuel sources and how by a certain date in the future America will be energy independent. However, like any addict, we lie repeatedly to ourselves as well as others who have a stake in our energy future.
The trap door through which the noose protrudes is the country of Iraq. Our wars in the Middle East have enabled and prolonged our connection to oil producing states. Like every addict who plans of surviving we must face our problems and gain control of our national life by becoming truly independent from the seduction of crude oil and it’s poisonous by-products.
