Church and State
Church and State (2008) – Mixed media, collage and wooden stars on canvas – 36 X 24 inches – This work bemoans the increasingly close relationship between religion and politics in America. It is an example of the kind of contemporary political art that is meant to educate, forewarn and entertain all at once. This is basically a charred American flag with upside down stars. In the normally blue field of stars are found faces of conservative political figures both past and present. Meanwhile, the blatant hypocrisy of the religious right causes the U.S. Capitol building to suffer a lightning strike. The stars on the left side of the flag form an upside down cross in reference to Satanism because I personally believe these people really are evil.
