Secession is still the dream of many in America from the southern United States. The desire to form a new Confederate States of America , complete with a new Confederate Army, Confederate Navy, and even their own confederate currency is popular with far too many political conservatives in the age of Obama. In the southern united states, secession has been the threatened solution to a host of recent political issues. Texas Governor and failed presidential candidate Rick Perry openly threatened secession in objection to the passage of Obama-care before seeking the Republican nomination in 2012. The same kinds of sectional rivalries that caused the original civil war in America clearly threaten at least our present, with the recent refusal of Senators from the southern United States, to approve disaster aid headed for the Northeast.Secession, as far am I’m concerned is illegal and immoral. The Confederate States of America was an illegal entity that had no right to exist except as some kind of far fetched white supremacy fantasy. Besides, America has already settled this issue once, what’s the use in rehashing it? Sectional rivalries not withstanding, America might be about as homogeneous as its ever going to get. What we need is unity in the face of continued financial devastation and hardship. I realize America has in it’s past become a meaner, more inhospitable place for minorities in times of economic distress. It seems white America has always had a way of taking care of its own, to the detriment of other communities, hiring each other, doing business with each other, even holding jobs open hoping to attract white applicants. These things are documented history, not just my opinion.
The southern United States has traditionally led the way in terms of overt racism, even in times of relative peace and prosperity. Various confederate symbols including the battle flag of the confederate army, have over the years been used to represent white supremacy. When it comes to white supremacy and the idea of secession, sectional rivalries soon take a back seat, too many far right wingers display this racist imagery all over America. In this this way the southern United States has become the spiritual, philosophical, and geographic home of the modern day ultra – conservative wing of Republican Party.
Within ultra – conservative ranks there is nostalgia for the old confederacy and its fantasy of legal secession. They dream of parading down the streets dressed in the uniform of the confederate army, or riding horses as heroic confederate cavalry officers. The Lost Cause is my response to the silliness of attempting to resurrect a Confederate States of America that only exist in their minds. In my picture the confederate army appears as a shining knight on horseback, the confederate navy is represented by three toy boats in the lagoon. The Disney castle represents the good ole Confederacy itself , while the cow jumps over the green cheese moon, representing the ultimate fantasy of southern secession from an America it has come to be dependent upon for survival.
